Biographical / Historical
Ronald J. Phillips, born in 1927, was a British architect. He arrived in Hong Kong in 1956 and was a pioneer in introducing the architectural design philosophy of modernism. His first project was as a co-architect designer of the City Hall, the Star Ferry Concourse and Edinburgh Place environs. The overall complex was opened in 1962 by the Governor, Sir Robert Brown Black. Other projects for which he was responsible included Murray Building, Beaconsfield House, Correctional Institution for Junior Offenders, Police Training School at Aberdeen and the redevelopment of Kai Tak Airport. Shortly after his arrival, he and other 26 architects founded the Hong Kong Society of Architects, now the Hong Kong Institute of Architects. He was the winner of the Pinnacle Award for lifetime achievement at the A&D Trophy Awards 2018.
